Individual Health Insurance in New Jersey: Real Cost Estimates and Comparisons
Shopping for health insurance on your own is harder than it should be. Most people compare monthly premiums and pick the lowest one, then spend the year paying more than they expected. We show you what a plan actually costs before you sign up.

Consider This
The Cheapest Monthly Premium Is Almost Never the Cheapest Plan
Here’s what typically happens: someone goes online, sorts by monthly premium, picks the lowest one. Then the deductible hits. Or their doctor isn’t in-network. Or a prescription costs three times what they expected.
Monthly premiums are only one part of what you’ll actually spend. Deductibles, copays, coinsurance, and out-of-pocket maximums all add up, and they vary dramatically between plans that look similar on the surface.
HOW WE HELP
We Help You Find The Plan That Actually Fits Your Healthcare Needs
We help you find and quote a plan that includes annual premiums and expected out-of-pocket expenses based on how you actually use healthcare. That means factoring in your deductible, your typical doctor visits, any specialist care, and your prescriptions.
We also verify your doctors are in-network, and your medications are covered at a reasonable tier before you enroll. Not after. This is the step most people skip, and it’s the one that causes the most expensive surprises.
- We compare individual and family plans from multiple carriers
- We help you estimate your total annual cost, not just the monthly premium
- We verify your doctors and hospitals are in-network before you commit
- We check your prescriptions are covered at a reasonable cost tier
- We stay available year-round for questions, claims issues, and renewals
WHO WE HELP
If You Don't Have Employer-Sponsored Health Coverage, We Are Here To Help
In New Jersey, residents are required to have qualifying health insurance coverage or face financial penalties. If you do not have coverage through an employer or other organization, you must obtain “minimum essential health coverage”.
Our agency is an independent broker that is not locked into one company. We compare options from top carriers and then sit down and explain your options in plain English.
As an independent insurance agency, serving New Jersey families since 1982, we compare options from top-rated carriers so you always get the health insurance coverage that fits your healthcare needs
SELF-EMPLOYED
You Work For Yourself
Freelancers, contractors, sole proprietors, and business owners without employees all need to find their own coverage. We specialize in helping self-employed NJ residents compare private health insurance plans that fit their income and healthcare needs.
BETWEEN JOBS
Your Employer Coverage Has Ended
Losing a job triggers a Special Enrollment Period, giving you a limited window to find new coverage. We help you understand your options and enroll before the deadline so you don’t have a gap in coverage.
FAMILIES & INDIVIDUALS
You're Shopping On Your Own
Whether you’re a family looking for comprehensive coverage or a healthy individual who wants a plan that makes financial sense, we compare your options and explain the differences honestly.

- Better if your income doesn't qualify for subsidies, or you want off-Marketplace options
PLAN DESIGN BASICS
The Terms That Actually Affect What You Pay
Most people know what a premium is. These are the terms that determine whether a plan that looks affordable actually is.
Deductible
What you pay before most plan benefits kick in. A $5,000 deductible means you pay the first $5,000 each year.
Copay
A fixed amount for a specific service, like $30 for a primary care visit, regardless of total cost.
Coinsurance
The percentage you share with the plan after meeting your deductible. 80/20 means you pay 20%.
Out-of-Pocket Max
The most you’ll pay in a plan year, excluding premiums. Plan covers 100% after this.
Network
Doctors with negotiated rates. Out-of-network typically costs significantly more.

COMMON QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to use GetCoveredNJ to get health insurance in NJ?
No. New Jersey residents can obtain health insurance directly from carriers outside the Marketplace. These off-exchange plans don’t come with income-based subsidies. If you don’t qualify for subsidies, off-exchange plans often offer more options and comparable pricing. Our agents can help you find coverage both on and off the exchange.
What is a Special Enrollment Period?
A Special Enrollment Period allows you to enroll in or change coverage outside standard Open Enrollment. Qualifying events include losing employer coverage, getting married, having a child, or turning 26 and aging off a parent’s plan.
How do I know if my doctor is in-network?
Before you enroll in any plan, we check whether your specific doctors and specialists are included in that plan’s network. Discovering your doctor is out-of-network after enrollment is an expensive problem to fix.
What's the difference between an HMO and a PPO?
An HMO requires in-network providers and typically requires referrals for specialists. A PPO gives you more flexibility to see out-of-network providers at a higher cost. We explain which type makes more sense for your healthcare habits during your consultation.
